Even I think a simple wood look is going to be less dated.

Unless you live in a weathered barn, shy away from anything that trendy and rustic. Doing so will narrow your choices considerably since some manufacturers are really concentrating on that type of look. We just installed LVP in our basement and looked at all of the high end lines when deciding what to install.

We are in Minneapolis. We just installed our LVP so will see what it is like in the winter. I guess part of the question is if you have little kids (we don't) who would be crawling around on the floor because that might change the entire equation. I did a poll of our neighbors (we all have old houses) asking what they had successfully installed for flooring in the basement in their homes. I'd say at least 75-80% used something other than carpet. Some who had carpet were happy with it, and some said never again because of issues they had had with carpet in a basement.
