I would be tempted to put the plant on a stand and let the thing grow. Although, it would be interesting to see the root system inside the pot...

Well, I got it done. It's not broken! It was really, really pinched. I scraped it a little so I dusted it with some Rootone, hopefully to keep rot or fungus away, then I put some moist soil around the roots and wrapped them up with plastic wrap, leaving the rhisome out in the air to dry up any injury.

Hi Barb, I have this problem once in awhile. I usually wait until the offset is further out and has some roots before I cut it away, as floorwalker suggests. I've cut pots down to the hole to release the offset, but half the time I end up damaging or breaking the offset in the process.

I've used two solutions over the years. One is to set the pot with the offset over an edge as you've done. The other that works well is to find a shallow tray or a pot bigger than the bottom of the one the sans is in, fill it with potting mix and set the sans pot on it. Idea is to let the offset root into the soil so that when you cut it away it's ready to go. I'd prefer the offset not be completely covered by the mix, so brush it away so the top shows. Once I cut it, I pot it right away with the cut end sticking up out of the mix so there's no possibility of rotting. If it's too short I brush soil away to expose the cut end to the air until it dries.

I see I'm too late, but great job on getting it out without any damage. Doesn't sound like you're going to cut the new plant away right now, but it has roots so you could if you want. You can leave almost all the rhizome out of the soil but with roots buried, that way the girdled area will heal in the air as well as the cut end. But playing it safe and not cutting now is always a good option too.

Thanks Russ and everyone. The drain holes were really tiny, about 3/8" and the rhisome was about 3/4" so seriously girdled. I would like for it to stay with the mom, so hopefully it will be okay.

OMG that dog!! Gorgeous! He/she looks like a show dog. Must take hours to brush!

That's Penny the Westie. Actually, she won't let me brush her, but she doesn't mat. She goes to the groomer every few weeks, and that's it. She was looking right at the sun, so that's why she is squinting. Thanks vitorama.

Yes Nexto, it's Horwood. It is new this year, it has grown a strong root system since I got it. I just hope this new baby will make it.

Barb, When I first saw your post with Penny, I though it was my dog. Except for the ears they look identical. Our dog's name was also Penny, we changed it to CoCo now. We just got her in June.

Nice growing, Barb! Next to pups popping out of the soil, pups coming out of a drain hole are my favorite things to see. My problem is I never know how to repot with a pup diving out the bottom! Please let me know/see how you handled it.

i just have my plant temporarily back in the cut out pot. I want to give it a little healing time in case it was damaged from the surgery. In another week or so I will replant.
