RoundUp before renovation question

I'm going to kill the entire front yard this year. Its about 4,500-5000 square feet. I've been watering the hell out of it to make sure it will be active enough for roundup to take it down.

I bought RoundUp concentrate (the regular one with the red label). I also have a 2 gallon pump sprayer specifically for this purpose. I also have Mark It Blue to make sure I know where I left off in between tank refills.

Questions:

Does RoundUp need a surfactant? I have some that I can use when mixing the tanks, but I am sure about whether it is necessary for RoundUp. Does anyone have any experience they would like to share?

I plan to spray either Thursday or Friday of this week, and then I am going on vacation until 8/10. When I come back, I plan on scalping the yard, watering it like mad for another week, and then spraying it again.

Anything else I should consider?

Most RoundUp concentrates already have a surfactant in them. If the label doesn't call for it then don't add any.

Make sure you keep pets out of the yard until it dries. It absorbs through the skin and causes major issues.

I just finished rounding up 10,000 sqft and heres a couple things i found useful. I couldn't find any dye to mark where i sprayed, so i got two garden hoses and laid them side by side with about 5 feet between them. I basically created a "lane" to walk down and spray. I took my time and it wasn't difficult at all to make sure i got every square inch. I did however go buy a backpack sprayer for $50 at lowes because the hand held 1 gallon sprayer is just to small to even do 1000 sqft.

Alan - Yeah I know what you mean about that amount of time it takes with a pump sprayer. I used a 1 gallon to spray the entire yard with Neem oil a couple of weeks ago and it took about 6 refills. Hopefully a 2 gallon will mean j only need to refill only about 3 times. Otherwise, I'm going to be sweating my butt off out there in this heatwave!

J4c11- Thanks. Yes, I will definitely be keeping the dog out of the yard. She doesn't go in the front anyway. Her kingdom is the fenced backyard. When I've had to apply chemicals back there (usually just a pre-emergent), I usually wait about 48 hours after everything has dried before I let her resume ruling her domain.

Morph - I'm hoping I will come back to a nice crispy lawn. I would go nuts watching it everyday if I was here... Wondering if I needed to tinker with more spray or what not (even though I know I shouldn't).

My neighbors are all going to think I am nuts. I have "the best lawn they've ever seen" but that isn't saying much. It's just a mix of whatever garbage that was there when I moved in, plus some cheap KBG and TTTF stuff that I overseeded with last fall. I call it the Sarah Palin lawn -- a pig with lipstick. I've just spent the past couple years mowing tall, watering deeply, munch mowing, and using integrated pest management and fertilizing (trending toward organically mostly).

Now that I've got the basics down, it's time to step up my game a little bit. I don't think I can swing $200 for something like the Super Seed Store blends ... But there are some top performing TTTF cultivars for my area that I've grown in small test plots that look great.

The TTTF in the Jonathan Green Black Beauty is one of the most gorgeous plants I've ever seen in person. The Dakota cultivar in it is one of the top recommended fescues for VA by VA Tech.

Titan RX is also sold locally here. It is another top recommended TTTF from VA Tech. I tried overseeding it last year and it seems to be doing well. Unfortunately, it is only sold in unblended/unmixed bags and I'm not sure how I feel about risking the renovation by doing a monostand.

But I digress... The RoundUp comes first. Thanks everyone for the tips!

Monostands of TTTF are not as big a deal as with KBG. TTTF is not that genetically diverse. I have a monostand of Speedway currently.

    Update:

watched the weather all day and the forecasts called for dry weather. Perfect. Decided to whip out the tank, mix it up and get to work!

It took me from 7 to 9 PM to spray the front lawn w/ RoundUp. (Somehow, I ended up refilling the 2Gal tank just as many times as I refilled the 1Gal tank that I used when spraying Neem oil a few weeks ago. Same area, same walking path. No idea how this happened. But there it is. Isn't that like x4 as much liquid spray....)

It was the hottest day of the summer heatwave. Even the damn crickets are too hot to chirp. Of course I'm the only living creature outside in my suburban neighborhood ...naturally wearing jeans, flannel and gloves and other protective gear. About half through, I start feeling like I'm verge of heat exhaustion and insanity.

Not kidding, as soon as I finish the last row, I see a distant lightning bolt and hear thunder. I sure hope this "FastAct technology - rainproof in 20 minutes!" holds true..

That's funny. I thought stuff like that only happens to me :-)

You're fine! Rainproof in 20 minutes really does mean rainproof in 20 minutes.

Worst case, you might have to re-do the last five minutes of work as that got washed off. The rest of it will definitely be OK.

I checked in with RoundUp and they advised that I go ahead and spray the lawn again the next day because it down poured about an hour afterwards. So I did that the next day.

When I left home on Sunday morning, the lawn was starting to already die. I'm hoping that when I return home, it will be completely dead.

Whats the next step here, folks? Do I go back and scalp it with the bagger? Water it lightly every day for a week to encourage more growth and then spray it again?. Does it make more sense to rake everything out first? My goal here is to turn the dead lawn in a nice seedbed for some TTTF..
