I think that depends on the variety you have. I had a Dr. Seuss that would come back each season and grow into a small tree.....................he bloomed the first year from a non-rooted cutting. Other varieties I have bloom the first year, but not as profusely. I don't know where you live, but here in North Texas, I cut my inground ones to the ground in November and mulch heavily. They have survived some pretty low temps and still emerged in the Spring. Good luck to you on getting this one to bloom. Do you fertilize???

Yes, I am fertilizing with chicken bedding. The soil is very bad here - we just moved here a year ago (from NW Illinois where the soil was fantastic.) I have never had such a hard time growing things - I was really spoiled. I am constantly working on ammending the soil and am also growing in raised beds since that seems like an easier option.

Are you still in Illinois? I have been amending for years and have some pretty good soil, but I grow my veggies in raised beds. I fertilize brugs with MG and tomato fertilizer mixed.....................seems to produce more blooms.

Roberta, since yours are inground, I would just keep the cuttings when you cut them back before the first freeze, and leave them in the ground. Mulch heavily and if you get a really bone chilling freeze, turn a bucket over the stump. Put your cuttings in water to root over the winter and then you will be assured to have brugs come next Spring.

Absolutely !!! Mine won't bloom again until the nights cool off a bit. Forgot to ask if it has a "Y"....................it won't bloom until it forms one.
