Next topic: paint colors

Hi, it's me again, and I'd like to focus on paint colors. The other thread got to 95 posts and that was just taking too long to scroll to the bottom! Here's a link to the previous discussion and a picture for prosperity:

The goal here is to get it sold and not spend a ton of money. I've had tons of lookers but no takers, and the market for houses like mine is stagnant unless the house is renovated.

My plan right now is to continue the wood floors into the kitchen, square off the arches, remove the corbels/shorten the bar to a ledge on this side, and probably move the cooktop to the long wall and put a shiny hood over it. And of course paint whatever needs to be painted.

Here's the floor material:

Royal Oak Vintage Brown

I love either honed black granite or metroquartz calcatta for the countertop, but open to suggestions. If I move the cooktop, I'll do a butcher block counter on the island.

The cabinets are currently painted Benjamin Moore Ashwood OC-47, which I think is nice enough so to the extent it makes sense to leave it, I'd like to.

The current trim is a lovely color I call smoker's white (Kelly Moore Bone) (this is absolutely awful and has to go):

The ceilings are Sherwin Williams Nacre 6154 (this is looking much more beige on my screen than I remember):

I know the trim has to go, I was hoping to leave the ceiling--I didn't realize how close it was to the ceiling though, there is noticeable contrast in person. Do y'all think I could just go with Nacre on the trim and walls?

So thoughts here...will Nacre do it? Do I need to go brighter? I'm thinking I do need to but I'd like not to. Benjamin Moore Dove White is what I did throughout my new house and it's very nice. What white do y'all recommend?

Smokers white made me laugh out loud for real. I'm no help with paint colors, but a tip for getting to the bottom of the thread is...click on comment in the original post. I love your plan of attack on this a lot. Good luck!

I would not put all thus money into a house you want to sell quickly. Talk with your realtor about a price where it WILL sell and price it accordingly and be done. My son bought a house in CT in spring 2008 -top of the market. A year ago, during a divorce, it finally sold after months on the market for $800,000 less than they paid for it. It still makes me sick to even write that figure, but the market there still hasn't recovered to the previous ridiculous highs. Sometimes one just has to bite the bullet and lower the price to a price that will sell.

I wouldn't either. It's already really nice. Buyers may have different tastes than you and want to put their own stamp on it. I wouldn't continue the hardwood- the tile looks great. Definitely do not square off the arches since they go with the windows- they're an architectural feature many buyers love. What I would do instead of a plain old common range hood, if possible, put one of these between two cabinets. We toOk out an over the stove microwave and put one of these- upscale and unique. They can be painted or stained.

I think the nacre will be fine.

Don' t do the black honed granite for the counters. Keep it light. The floors are dark and if you do the dark counters I'm afraid it again will wind up looking too dark and a bit dated again. Additionally I wouldn't put in a counter with such a strong pattern, much as I love it. Too many people are afraid of a lot of pattern. Pick a marble look quartz with just a bit of a more overall pattern.

Before you spend a ton of money, try changing the light bulbs in your kitchen to something with a cooler color temperature. Everything in the photo of you kitchen looks yellow, including the cabinets, which look very different in the pic than the swatch of BM Ashwood you posted. Maybe it's just the photograph, but I'm betting it's the lighting.
