Help! Custom built home needs TLC!

I'm so lost on how to decorate my living room. It's the focal point of my house so I'm starting with this room. I really wish I hired an interior designer when I built. I'm so lost! Any help with all the BROWN. Brown leather furniture and so much of the same stuff), brown carpet (which appeared lighter in the carpet square we picked), brown tables.... Ugggg! Paint color? Accent furniture? Wall decor? Help! Thank you so much!

What sort of budget do you have left to use towards this room? Can any of the furniture be used elsewhere (maybe a basement family room) or sold on consignment? If you have some flexibility with changing your furnishings then I recommend you contact an interior designer at this point to move forwards and get the room of your dreams.

I would move the tv to the left wall as you enter the home. Move seating around so the couch is facing the tv and you have more open/walking space as you enter the home. If all of the seating is not needed I would remove 1 or 2 pieces to another room or sale.

Judy is right, no more brown. The blue she suggests is lovely. Find a nice fabric with colors that you like and go from there to add warmth and life to the room. Maybe some subtle window panels with throw pillows in different patterns that compliment the curtains.

    A designer/decorator would help. A few suggestions:
    1. Paint your front door black. Remove blinds and get a frosted vinyl that looks like leaded glass. Have a long, narrow walk-off mat in front of door.
    2. It looks like you have some blue in your tile so you may want to pull that out. Would like to see some entry furniture on the blank wall.
    3. Move or sell the black overstuffed chairs. Get new fabric chairs to flank the fireplace. Move the love seat in closer to sofa so you can walk behind it. Light area rug, round ottoman, etc. Definitely has potential but I think all the tables should go.

    Did you figure out?

Can any of the seating be returned? If so, I'd probably lose everything except the sofa, but at least the loveseat and one chair. Whatever seating you end up with needs to be much closer together. You don't have to fill the room with it; it's more important that it look like a cohesive conversation area, even if it leaves empty space all around.

The TV would look better and be more ergonomic over a long console on the wall to the left of the fireplace.

You've got some items like that table against the wall and the too wide sofa table that serve no purpose. I replaced the sofa table with a narrower, statement piece, replaced the chairs with smaller lighter ones, moved the TV, added a Noguchi coffee table, and added a plant and curtains and a vase.

I couldn't resist this sofa table, though it's crazy expensive. If you've got any diy skills, you might try to duplicate something like this, or just paint an interesting table in whatever accent color you choose.

Is this your only living space? If so, could you move the tv off the fireplace, and place it on the wall where you now have two chairs and a console or long table? Reorienting the furniture so that the fireplace is the feature seen from the front door, instead of the back of the sofa, would be a good start.

Do you plan to keep the brown furniture?

Omg! You guys are amazing! Creating a drawing for my specific living room took time and I REALLY appreciate it. I was on this app veerrrrry late last night, so I did lay in bed all day today not feeling the greatest. But I am putting my furniture up now to sell and I'm itching to go get soft white linen drapes that are floor length. That's my start. Once furniture sells, I'm on the hunt for one oversized chair that welcomes people to get cozy.

My biggest problem is the window treatments are brand new. I hope that once I put the soft white drapes up it will brighten the room and take the choppiness away from the blinds going half way up the window.

At the front door, do the blinds really take that much away to have to replace?

The open wall at the front door I am doing a console table with baskets for shoes. I would also like to see a bench of some sort there if I can do it right without looking cluttery. I want a wall of family pictures, but again, not to be super busy. I want neat and clean, not a bunch of "stuff"...

I'll update soon!!!! You guys are so helpful!!!!!!!!

Caryn, your blinds are fine. You just need curtains to soften the space, and to cozy it up a bit.

A wall of family pictures can get tricky. They're really more appropriate in more private areas of the house, but if you really want one, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

No collage frames holding snapshots. They're busy and no one can see them unless they're on top of them. It becomes visual clutter.

No studio shots. Photos should be as compelling as art. So the kids playing dress up, or baby's first ice cream, or kissing the dog.

Have your images cropped and enhanced, printed either in black and white or sepia, and framed the same.

I would not start with window treatments first. Custom drapery is expensive, wait until you have a plan in place. Best to choose your upholstered pieces first. Would be great to hire a designer at this point to save you from some very expensive mistakes. Furniture has very little resale value.
Beautiful home, take your time, enjoy the process!
