LindaOH.....I sewed each square. I've tried the fusible grid and didn't care for it.

Donna, The piano key border came from another of the animal patterns, but I really like it for this one, too.

Theresa, There are more animal patterns that are similar I want to do, but not right away. :-)

Very cute. Just wondering. Instead of sewing each square, could you have sew in strips and then cut...sewing in more as needed?

Bev2009, That could have been done and I did do a few but not many since I wanted to use up some squares and also wanted more of a scrappy appearance.

I've used the fusible grid a couple of times and it makes a very stiff quilt. Really only suitable for a wall hanging.

I'm a beginner. How is a quilt like that accomplished? Do you build it a strip at a time? Is there a grid type pattern that you follow?

The patterns are in Patch Pal Collections and the main design is made with squares. http://www.leisurearts.com/patch-pals-collection-best-of-quiltmaker.html You can make the squares any size you want depending on the size you want. I posted a picture of the puppy I made awhile back.
