If you love the wood, then keep it but find other ways to break it up. In the room pictured, for example, the brick fireplace surround is contributing to the brown-ness of the wood, and could be changed instead to tile or some other material that contrasts with the wood better. Also, nice big rug that is not brown would help a lot too.

You are seeing a clash of wood tones in this room. The wall units appear a bit more orange and the floors a bit more pink/cinnamon. One of the two could be changed...depending on how much you want to spend.

Because both are in REALLY good shape, you would want to bring in a professional to do this. If you like the wood of the built-ins, then you should keep the wood look. You can STRIP the finish to find the very pale wood underneath. You can then apply a clear coat finish (does NOT amber or turn orange) or you can stain a colour that has the SAME pink/cinnamon/salmon colouring as the floor.

I think the CLASH is what is most bothersome. A large area run in front of the fireplace/built ins might separate the two colours enough to let them get along and play nice. But the fact remains that you have COLOUR CLASH in this room.

The floor and the pink in the fireplace work VERY well together (both have the pink/salmon tones)...the wall unit is the odd-man-out.

The choice is yours. You might want to live with it for a while to see how you feel about it in a year. You will then have a much better understanding of how your furniture works (or doesn't) in this space and you can make changes accordingly.

If you wish to refinish the floors, do that before you move in. If you want to refinish the built-in, do that a year or so down the line.

IMO this all just blends together as one blah orangey wood and brick wall I would paint the woodwork in this space in fact if it was my space I would get rid rid of the cluttered shelves and hang a piece of art on either side of the fireplace

This looks dated and heavy to my eye. Our family home in 1985. Not to say it doesn’t have potential - and I have nothing against wood - but I think this space need a good freshening up with a nice coat or two of white paint on all that wood. And replace the brass fireplace surround. Maybe a new mantel and paint out the brick even if you are up to it.

I wouldn't paint the wood, but paint the fireplace metal surround fireproof black. A beautiful rug in that room and a dramatic painting over the fireplace would balance out the wood. I love it but would put real books or gorgeous modern objects on the shelves.
