It's not possible to ID a fig just from it's leaves. We would need a clear photo of a ripe fig next to a quarter (for size reference) both the inside and the outside.

f you bought it from a garden center, it is probably a common fig grown in your area. I would call the center to find out what you bought.

The garden center has no clue. That is why I posted the question here.

While I wait for it to produce some figs next summer, can I prune this now? I want it to be a small tree, not a spreading shrub, as I do not have room for a large shrub.

Your tree may be some variation of turkey, it is certainly not a Celeste. The fruit will reveal her secrets, though don't expect good fruit right away from any young figgy.

Figs are very responsive to pruning and they are highly supple and shapeable when young and while growing. One could in fact grow an outbuilding, chapel or small house out of interwoven fig trees, it would just take ten years or so.

I also prefer to grow them as trees as opposed to bushes, but trees with two to three trunks, for good fun climbing once mature.
