Too bad- how long did it go without watering?

Have you been deep watering since you returned to try and revive it? It might come back, but I doubt it will be in the lovely shape it originally had.

How long were you on vacation? Was there any rain in that time?
Scrape a tiny bit of the bark off the branches with dead leaves...is there green beneath the bark? How big was the root ball?

It will probably recover next Spring if it has some green leaves now.

All you can do to help is water it...but don't overdo it.

Next time you go on vacation you could try one of those gator bags.

Right^. If properly watered prior to, a one-week layoff from watering should not be significant.

Nothing to be done however, except the big usual-water management. And that too means simply to water if needed, nothing more, nothing less. Usually a once-a-week schedule is adequate, although one must adjust any such schedule-not the best way to think of plant's watering needs-according to extant conditions. If it's been 95 F every day and high winds, to use an exaggerated set of conditions (although not impossible by any means), this "schedule" may need to be altered. Your fingers in the soil will tell the tale.

We were gone a week, but perhaps the tree went two weeks without watering. It was probably hot and windy, though we were out of town and I am not sure if it rained. My garden did fine during this period which surprised me. I like the gator bag idea. The rootball was pretty small but we did dig up a very large area to make it easier on the tree. I hate to loose that one and we will try to revive it. We left for another trip today, but I gave it a nice long 15 minute watering with the hose, so hopefully it will not get worse.
