How does the pool/spa combo work?

The picture looks like the spa water has been lowered for spa mode but the pool is still spilling into it.

Hello, and thank you for your inquiry. What you are seeing is an illusion, and the pool/spa combination works like any other pool/spa combination. What appears to be water flowing from the pool back into the spa in spa mode is actually water flowing onto a sunshelf, which is at a lower elevation than the top of the spa. The tile wall of the spa blends visually into the sunshelf so it appears to be at the same elevation. Hopefully this helps clear up the matter.

Thank you for the quick response! So when it comes out of spa mode and goes back to pool mode the spa spills into the pool.

What are the measurements of this pool? Also, on the other side of the sun deck, is is a flat wall? I am planning a sun deck (called baja deck here in SoCal) and in pool spa like this, but I want to be sure I can do laps. Hopefully you can provide some insight! We are also doing a diving board, and curious as to what the depth is of this pool and when to transition. I want to be sure that my pool is safe to dive in and doesn't get shallow to soon. Etc. Thank you.

Hello, and thanks for your inquiry. The other side of the sundeck is a vertical wall that is perfectly suited for flip turns and pushing off. The depth of this pool is 3'6" to 9'0". The diving envelope will be determined by your local municipal codes, which usually follow the APSP/ANSI guidelines. It's always best to find a quality local pool designer and builder that you trust and who will be intimately familiar with the local ordinances.

Ok so if I am understanding this correctly, the pool is 3'6" at the wall. That seems like a shallow depth for a flip turn. Also I am wondering about the steps. Where are they? How did you incorporate them into your design to minimize the impact to the side distance?

The steps are incorporated into the sunshelf, as you can see from image below.

Step configurations are varied and can be adjusted for lap swimming. Steps can also be eliminated in favor of in-wall steps with grab rails, if desired.

As a rule of thumb, the minimum depth that we use a for flip turns is 3.5 feet. However, depending on the height of the swimmer, this could be adjusted. One has to take into consideration the other swimmers as well. For example, if children will be using the pool, a shallow end of 4' or 4.5' might be too deep for them to enjoy the shallow area.
