Weed jungle

I have what I call a weed jungle in my back hard. It is so fast growing that is it impossible to keep up with. I rent my house so I don't plan to put any significant money into dealing with the problem. I'm really just curious. what are these things....particularly the ones with the huge thick stem that I've hacked off in a blind weed rage. Ha! They have these little bundles of round seeds/flowers. The stem is smooth, when I pull it out its only got about 2-3inches of root, and it's light as a feather!
