Need Help identifying this presumed weed

My husband and I just bought our 1st house this past spring and are discovering our new yard. This is popping up in my grass & a flower bed of mums. I presume it is a weed. Above the area is a dogwood tree. I have tried to pull it out, but the root is very deep/tough. How can I stop its' growth without causing further damage to my grass/landscape? We live in southeast Michigan. Thanks
