My advice? Visit your local tile center for ideas and supply. We've done many "rug" tile setting jobs. Thanks so much for that tip. We decided on buying some Moroccan hand painted cement tile which as a similar effect. This is the one we're going with, and I think it'll be simpler for the tile guy to put in (and especially easy for us to design):

@noodle55, just be careful with those tiles. What you're trying to replicate is symmetrical in both directions. Your tiles aren't. And the lines and colors aren't as sharp. I'm sure it'll be lovely, but it might not give you the exact look you want.
