Kitchen update

I flooded kitchen causing water damage to kitchen /dinning room combination & living room floor (we just downsized to this patio home) & now having to paint kitchen cabinets & install new flooring.. Seeking advice on cabinet colors, flooring & etc. was already planning to repainted cabinets..but this accident pushed plans forward. 1) cabinet color 2) flooring - was engineered hardwood flooring also extends into large living room as well. 3) dark island piece will be replaced. Need to move forward quickly appreciate advice? ( no children or pets - we do cook / use kitchen a lot) thanks Barb

White or off-white is the safest choice. If you want a color, sage green, yellow or cornflower blue would look beautiful. Solid hardwood flooring in a medium brown tone. Are you keeping the granite countertops? If yes, I'd replace the combination 3" granite and tile backsplash with either all granite or all tile. If not then a simpler white quartz countertop.

You could paint them a dark color similar to the island or a creamy white.

Island has got to go....need one with actual storage space..and provide better seating with overhang top..will be shopping on that piece as well as new cabinet hardware .
No change in granite counter.

It is hard to see the color on the counter, but it might be fun to go with a blue for the cabinets. Let's think outside that white on white box.

However, if you do go white, the counters will look lovely.

Cabinets are Oak ...will grain be a distraction when painted.
I love the "thought" of blue ..but not that much of a chance taker.

Maybe you could do all white and then go blue for your island (which would also help minimize any mismatch in cabinet styles).

As for grain, that tends to get overblown. With proper prep and paint, it will look just great, as this example shows:
