White is paint. Do you mean bright colors? or gray?

What would be your preference if matters of fashion were not an issue? It's easier to comment on that than on an abstract question...

If you plan on resale I suggest white, other wise painted cabinets are very great. My daughter just painted her mid centurey built in bathroom vanity in a very pale pale aqua and added new chrome modern pulls white counter top and white framed mirror that she painted herself. New chrome and seeded glass light and chrome faucet. She had the peach cast iron bathtub sprayed white too. The bath is transformed.....go for it!

I was thinking a light shade of grey . Something neutral

Some of my favorite bathrooms have gray cabinetry. I don't think that has to be a problem -- while white kitchens seem to be a widespread dream, gray or espresso cabinets are very common and probably more so than white (unless people are updating old cabinets with paint).
