You have some great feature in this room. The fireplace, the beams, a great wood floor. The wall color has to change of course. You have only provided one photo so where is the cable hook up and where are you willing to locate the TV? This room or another room in this large home? What is the size of this room?

Are you outside of Richmond? The room looks like one I saw in a real estate listing about a year ago. I was too late to go see it.

Are those radiant baseboard heaters? They look like the ones I have in my 1966 split level. They are an ugly color and look dirty so I would paint them white or get new covers for them. Take those red valance curtains down immediately. You need a nice large contemporary area rug, a largish light colored sectional (cream, grey, blue colored) and an accent chair or two. It's such a nice wide space! You can do so much. Pick new furniture you like and then pick a complimentary color that goes with your furniture. But please get rid of that floral couch!

The tv can go in left corner, measure to know how big to get. Make sure to center the couch in front of fp.

This is a beautiful room! But currently, the architecture, geometry, and proportions of the room feel much more contemporary than its furnishings. The window treatments and furniture are very dated. If traditional and/or antiques are truly your style, perhaps you could mix some vintage pieces that have a sleeker aesthetic (art deco, Craftsman, mid-century) for an eclectic look that suits both the room and your tastes. A large area rug would ground the furniture. I would paint the walls a bright, but not white neutral. Perhaps choose the brightest shade in the fireplace stone - a pale gray or light taupe? And if the window treatments aren't needed for privacy, you could lose them altogether, or just replace with long white sheers if you do need some coverage. Lastly, that trim that runs the length of the wall over the doorways cuts that wall down. I would get rid of it if you can.

I would first ditch the flower-encrusted sofa. Then get rid of the valances. Then a warm light paint.

Lose the valences, lamp, and couch. Paint *after* you have chosen furnishings. You are really lucky to have a great space to work with.

Paint the walls white white. I like the ceiling, floor fireplace and beams.

With you large lovely room, you can do some great and very livable furnishing arrangements.

Thank you all for the comments!! I'm purchasing this house and would like to make it cozy and look fresh and clean! The furniture is not mine so it will all go. It is a raised ranch built in the 60s. I also want to change the color in the kitchen and paint the cabinets. Thinking white on top and possible another color on the bottom. The floor is a off white tile and the rest of the house is a light wood floor.

You could have window seats made on each side of fp.
