Different Chairs for Dining Table?

last modified: 9 years ago

Here is my dining space. I am not a fan of the chairs but I got a great deal on CL for the table and the chairs came with it.

Thoughts on windsor chairs with my table? I would maybe paint them a black brown?

Two styles to choose from that are currently on CL. I really like the first
one the best but there are only 4 and I would have to get two in the style of the third photo for the end chairs. I would much prefer they all were the same.

What do you all think?

I like number 1 and number 2. I don't care for those wicker but I can see a straighter, narrower wicker with your table. I think it may be World Market that has a weathered (grey maybe) that I have seen used by others. You might look there.

I could also see 2 of the #1 Windsor chairs at the ends of the table and keeping your existing chairs along the sides (with spares for when you expand the table). But I'm sure whatever you're cooking up will look great. Looking forward to seeing it!!

Hint, not using windsor chairs. Am using upholstered and caned chairs. Here is a sneak peek with a bad mock up.

Did you convince your DH you needed a change? Sometimes I just go ahead with something and in the end he actually likes it.

Yes, I talked him into it. He said I was very persistent. haha

    Very pretty!

Ok ok here are the chairs. The four cane chairs are from CL and the two upholstered are from Overstock.

Or I can get the four windsor chairs I posted above in the first picture (first option).

    Thoughts?

Just catching up with this thread, and I like your choices here above! My only hesitation would be that the heights of the 2 styles are too similar. I'd perhaps keep looking either for taller upholstered (or slipcovered chair, like a parsons) and keep the cane, or vice versa.

I'm a fan of Windsor chairs but see them done well in so few applications. IMO they're not easily mixed and matched, and I couldn't see them with your table. I love wicker, I'll admit. They'll probably be my next DR chairs. But your mix of cane and upholstery will look very nice--the upholstery will add some softness to the area.

As a sidenote, we dined at a restaurant last week that had rocking chairs. Talk about a bad strategy... after finishing a big meal, who wants to get up from a rocking chair? We overstayed our welcome.

Lisa, the upholstered chairs are wider and taller than the cane chairs. The cane at the highest point is 36" and the width is 19" the upholstered are 38.5" tall and 21" wide. They are also more substantial and light beige. I think that should make them appear even larger and taller.

What do you think? My mock up is not to scale. I just wanted to use it to get a feel of the looks of the chairs with my table and each other.

Thanks, Aktillery, I was just looking at the mock-up itself, and they seemed so similar in height.

I still think these two styles of chairs (the cane and upholstered) just don't work well together. I'd want something a bit less contemporary than the upholstered chair, if you were going with the cane chairs. Something like this to really anchor the ends of the table. Like this below. (Keep in mind though I would go with the rattan... so others will probably give you more sane advice than me).

I love the cane chairs from CL, but much prefer the chairs Lisa posted to coordinate with them. I don't think the first Overstock chairs you mocked up are the best choice with the cane chairs.

I have cats and do not think the slipcovered chair would work. Plus, that breaks my budget a little. Also I can not go any wider than 22" wide or it will be tight. Any other similar chairs to suggest?

I agree that two chairs while nice on their own, dont coordinate well, although I have been wrong before. I like the cane chairs a lot, I would get those and look for something else to co ordinate. I really like the color though of the overstock chair, goes well with your carpet and lightens up the area.

Just to clarify, you can't have wider than 22" at the ends of the table? Maybe you have different experience, but my cats never bothered slip covered because they couldn't get good traction with their claws (the fabric moved too much) as opposed to upholstered furniture which they believed was their king size scratching posts.

I remeasured and could fit 25" and not a hair more. The legs of my table are thick so it causes me limited space for width of a chair.

I can't believe I'm posting these because they are likely all wrong with the cane chairs...but maybe the legs are similar to your table? What I like is the shape of the top of the back and the lack of tufting, though. They are narrow, too :-) Just wondering if you couldn't find something with a little curve at the top to coordinate with the cane chairs?

    Graciela side chair

eta...looking at your table legs and the cane chair legs, it seems like it might be too much to add a 3rd type of leg, which is why the slipcovered ones appeal to me. Or maybe something like this that simply covers the legs?

these are from Home decorators, but are almost as much as the ones Lisa posted. They come in a gazillion fabric/color choices.

aktillery, if you have cats, cane chairs may not be the best option. We had cane chairs which lasted less than 5 years with kids and pets.

I like the look of the Windsor chairs, but I currently have a dining table set with Windsor chairs and they are not very comfortable. I can't sit in them longer than 30 minutes or so.

Ak, I can completely understand not wanting fabric on your chairs with cats. My cats don't have claws and it was great with my leather sofa. But, I decided to do fabric on my newest sofa and regret it tremendously. All those little hairs threading themselves into the fibers are a pain, not to mention the shedding.

I think if your cats don't have claws and you can find something like Olychick posted above with a curved back and/or leg to go with the cane French country chairs, I think that would look fine.

Have you considered using two of those chairs on one side and one on each end, and then get a bench?

You could even do a bench with a back as long as it has similar lines.

Another inspiration pic. I love the wingback chairs in pic with cane chairs. I'm sure my two cats would each claim one for a bed. :-(

Love the cane chairs but maybe something with some curves, either back or arm rest for the upholstered chairs.

Carrington Court makes nice chairs. I bought four custom Parson chairs from them after ordering fabric samples. I did a rolled back with gathered skirting. Had heard about them on GW. They were very comfortable.

I have ordered these chairs. I could easily darken the wood to match the color on the cane chairs. They are taller and the legs match well with the other chairs.... plus they have similar curved lines.

    Thoughts??

    Very nice!

Funny, I've been oogling cane chairs, too, but until I find some am sticking with my four Windsor chairs and two upholstered end chairs :)

Thanks nosoccermom. I am sure your windsor and upolstered chairs look great!

Are you doing cane w 2 upholstered on the end? Sounds nice!

I like them a lot, Amy! Especially the curves and softness they bring to your otherwise angular table and hutch. They are going to look great with your rug too.

Exactly Mtn. I cannot wait to get them and set them up! I need to something fun for my centerpiece as well. Need to beef it up!

Very pretty. I have a fondness for cane chairs. I have vintage cane chairs (painted) but with upholstered seats (cane backs) with my oak (stained) table. Love them!

Lovely choices on both. I used to have cane chairs almost exactly like those but with cloth seats and they were very comfy and lightweight. Can't wait to see it done!

Those are really great, I think. I'd seen them in my search and when I went to post pics, I couldn't find them again. I think the legs are so much better with the cane chairs and the curve on top works.

make sure the cane is not brittle. Can bust easily.

    I will, thanks Maggie.

PS. Your cats will love them, too ;-)

Love it!! The head chairs can be of a different height, that's perfectly acceptable now imo.

Love the cane chairs!! I've been looking for a pair for awhile myself on CL. Going to see this set today:

Hard to tell what they will be like in person but if they are half as nice as the ones you found, I'll be thrilled.

I sense a resurgence of this look; although I suppose it never really went "out". Your new chairs will really give the room more interest as well as comfort. I can't wait to see them around your table.

jjam, those chairs look like they would be very comfortable. Let me know what you think

Thanks for the vote of confidence on my selection. I am picking them up today, She wanted 350 and I got her down to 300 for all four. Not too bad.

I would not get cane chairs...ever. I have always found Windsor chairs to be profoundly uncomfortable.

The most comfortable chairs, IMO, are the real school and library chairs. And I Love the way they look...but they have to be the real thing - read: EXPENSIVE (but worth every dime). Sometimes they show up on CL, eBay, etc. Think about it: they have to be comfortable, and sturdy, right? People sit in them for long periods of time for reading and studying.

Easy to keep clean too! ;-)

Ah! Boston CL - I think I'm going to grab six of these! $15 ea.???? That is a steal. They're like $250 new. Don't seem to have any with arms, though. Otherwise, I'd suggest asking them to ship a set to you.

Thank you, Aktillery, for causing me to look!

    Lol No problem Tib.

Ooooh, can't wait till you get them home! Are you going to paint yours?

I live in Canada and if my house ever sells I would be putting this set of mine on sale. Any idea what would be a reasonable price.

i have 4 side chairs, 2 armchairs, 1 table with 3 leaves, 2 are matching wood one is homemade which we use with a tablecloth so you cannot see it. also a china cabinet.

just wondering when I see all these cane chairs what I would ask.

    thanks

Oops. Did I miss a decision/buy already made by aktillery?

I am picking up the cane chairs today. I already ordered the tufted chairs I posted yesterday at 5:45 for the host and hostess chairs.

Tina, not sure if you were directing the painting question at me but no I am not going to paint the cane chairs.

It is going to be a long haul to go get them in another town so I hope they are great shape!

Yes, it was directed at you. I'm excited you are getting the cane chairs and the upholstered chairs for the host/hostess. I'm sure they will be lovely! My vintage cane chairs are painted, but I was very lucky to purchase them from a gal who has a business in painting furniture! So, no painting for me. LOL

sorry..didn't read the whole thread yet..but I was looking at some pictures, and found this: https://viyet.com/windsor-arm-chair.html

isn't it the same chair as the first one shown? I immediately came here to make sure..))

PS I read some more-you went with the cane ones. Congrats! They look very comfy to me

Holy Moly, April. $1,500 per chair!

I'd have to sell body parts on the black market. :-)

Yes, that's what stricken me..:) One starts wondering..

    amykath thanked aprilneverends

Those are really lovely, though, April. Those antique wooden chair have the perfect (ummmm) indentation in the seat to make them comfortable to sit in for long periods of time. My grandparents had all-wood dining chairs that were perfectly comfortable. I think it's along the lines of Tibbrix's explanation above of the school/library chairs--the booty area is curved for longer periods of sitting.
