So far only once and generally in the fall/winter. Several of my orchids are blooming oft cycle.

Hi Darlene. I do love this dendrobium. Mine is now getting ready to unfurl buds on three spikes. I wish Nick would post a pic of his plant in bloom. I can imagine it must be gorgeous!

Arthur, my plant is the 'Dark Joy'. Nick probably got his plant originally from an Aussie nursery.. Now many of the orchid nurseries do sell many of the Aussie orchids.

'Dark Joy' seems to be pretty popular. Whenever I do a search for images there are a lot of 'Dark Joy'.

On another note, I can actually smell a fragrance now. I had not detected one in the summer flowers. Strange. It is probably on me and not the plant though.

I have Dark Joy also from Nick. It has bloomed a few flowers but it appears to have several spikes forming. If it gets picture worthy I'll post it.

The lowest temperature it was exposed to was 48-50F for about 6-8 weeks.

My blooms have a light fragrace. I'm so disappointed that the individual blooms last less than a week! I like that the the plant grows with a nice shape, so it's pretty even when not in bloom.

I would say the blooms hang around 7-10 days.

Is it frost tender? I live in rural Victoria outside of Ballarat.

I suppose it depends on the aspect of the place where you are growing the orchid. In other words are you in a frost hollow or say on a slope dipping to the North?

So, just 1K south here there is a frost hollow which has colder temps at night.

The other unknown is how much having a shade cloth cover breaks the effects of frost.

Is there a local orchid society where you can ask re. winter orchid culture?

I am in zone 6 in northeast Ohio, USA. I bring this plant in before frost hit. Over the winter, It is keep in a low heat greenhouse, which experiences 48F (~9C) nights.

Unfortunately frost here is just a precursor to freezing temperatures and heavier snowfall. All of my orchids require shelter from that.
