How accurate is the screwdriver test?

A few people here recommend sticking a 6" screwdriver into the soil. If it goes all the way in, you have enough water in the soil. If not, then time to water. I'm curious if anybody has tested this idea with a moisture probe or by other means. I get the screwdriver all the way in, yet I know my lawn is a little heat stressed and hasn't been watered for a long time.

Does organic content matter for this test? I think morpheus said he can dig up soil with his bare hands. Even dry soil?

Just curious because it is a great way to see if you need more water, other than the appearance of your lawn, of course.
