I also posted this picture and question on the "tree" forum simply because it was attached to a tree in my yard.

I was tending my flower garden below, which has plenty of bee and butterfly friendly plants, and I noticed this baseball sized ball looking thing on the tree. Can anyone shed some light on what this might be? There also seems to be some sort of liquid dripping from it.
