Do you have a picture of it to show? From my own experience, mine usually mature in about 4 months from when the fruit first set. Those flowers that you had mentioned that did not set into fruit could be the male flowers. They usually show up after the sighting of the first set of fruit. They'll drop off shortly after.

I tried down loading a photo but I don't think it came through. My banana tree is 15-20 ft. tall, I don't know the variety.

You should be able to enjoy the harvest in October which is approximately 4 months from the time when the fruit first set. The fruit will fill out as they mature.
