Your tomatoes show catfacing, cracking, and zippering. Many larger heirlooms are susceptible to these kinds of deformations, which can have many different causes but most are out of our control unless growing in climate-controlled conditions. If they bother you, choose varieties that don't have a problem with such deformities. If you're growing for taste, don't worry about them. The fruit are perfectly safe to eat.

It also looks like there's a touch of blotchy ripening there, too. It can be caused by heat and/or potassium deficiency, some pest damage (thrips, stinkbugs), etc. Also safe to eat.

I am in East Tennessee and my Purple Cherokee look exactly like this and I was wondering the same thing. We have been cutting away the ugly part and eating the rest.

These kinds of deformations are almost impossible to avoid in certain large heirlooms if you grow them exposed to weather and the elements. Anything that is large and has that luscious, melting texture when ripe with relatively thin skins will definitely be susceptible, i.e., many of the most delicious and prized-for-taste heirlooms. Note that many hybrids that aren't susceptible to these kinds of problems have thicker skins and more robust, meaty/chewy outer wall texture.
