It could be Bermuda grass.

Turns out, you are right! The extension agent took one look at it and said "Bermuda" and explained the difference between common bermuda (bad) and turf bermuda (good).

Also, point of interest, "couchgrass" is what Australians call bermuda.

Couch grass, Elymus repens, is also known as Quack Grass, Quick grass, Witch grass, and others not printable, but I have never heard it called Bermuda grass, before. It spreads by both seeds and rhizomes and the common plant poisons do not do a good job of controlling it, or it would not need repeated applications to attempt to control it.

The best means of getting rid of this pesky "weed" is to dig it out getting all of the root bits and pieces.

I've come to believe that Bermuda Grass is Couch Grass.

The above picture doesn't quite look like Couch Grass to me. It seems too course but it's hard to figure out the scale.

I Googled Torpedo Grass and wonder if it is that. Torpedo Grass is a whopper.

Also, I wouldn't believe the talk about Good Bermuda and Bad Bermuda. If you have Bermuda Grass in your lawn, you will have it in other places too.

Any suggestions on how to combat this when it's mixed in with my lawn?

Me again... Just ducking in to say that I don't think it's Torpedo Grass after all [blush]. I've gone back to thinking Bermuda. Sorry.
