Never had lima beans live through a winter, so I don't know. They are tricky, sometimes when stunted or their cycle is interupted, they will bloom profusely but never set pods.

Tks Farmerdill ~ These are pampered, Growing in the best spot, on a permanent trellis.
less than 20 vines, and we picked about 8lbs + (beans only) from them in the one season. Vines are as thick as a finger already.
Bees are busy on the flowers, so we hope for an early and much extended second year harvest.

When I lived in San Diego, I was able to winter over King of the Garden lima beans twice. The vines looked pretty sickly over the winter, but bushed out again when the days warmed. They produced an early crop of beans, but those beans were smaller than in the previous year. I found it to be more productive to start new plants every year from seed, and to change the location every year.

These hardly knew it was winter here , it was an exceptionally mild one.
They did not lose leaves, they just slowed down.
I will start a second permanent trellis again soon, they just take a long time before production. but we like them so much "we can eat them every day"

It would be socially irresponsible of me to eat lima beans every day... but I could. ;-)

We don't go to town much so it's ok to have beans often...

Ok harvested the first lot.
5.1kg of shelled beans from the 16 vines.
there is a couple still on them that will have to dry before picking.
The pods were of normal size - same as first season - just more.
There are some new flowers , but seems that it's not time for flowering again -
yet.

Charles, Sorry but I dot know the variety,
The seeds are Light green in color even when dried, the pods set about 4 seeds in each o average. I have tried to identify the type from seed catalogs without any luck. I suspect its a reasonably old variety as it came to me from someone who got seed from someone etc.
To update, we got a large early harvest, then high heat and few new flowers setting pods after that. There are a few now. I suspect there will be a lot of flowering after summer solstice, mostly after a big rain event and they normally finish late in the season with a Big harvest.
