Tried "pruning" bulbosa air plant...help?

My bulbosa air plant had some dried outer leaves around the base. I pulled them off, and they came off (not incredibly easy, but not hard). But now, the base (bulb?) is revealed, and looks white and shiny. Did I do something wrong? Will it harden up and turn darker


again or did I ruin it?
