Lighting SOS!!

You all were so helpful in my floating shelves thread, thank you!!

Dilemna-- 3 different types of lighting needed & to be cohesive. DH made these pendants out of welded bolts- I do like them. But, feel the barn lights are too big now/competing.

Other wall before the pendants

Would something like these sconces work better?

And then I have the FP that is wired for sconces. Really liked these Laura Lee sconces for their simplicity. But do they go?

It seems I need to have the pendants over island take dominance & let the others be supporting players. But do these all go together?

Now that I look at your pics again, the wall sconces in the kitchen might be too massive. I don't know if the articulating sconces would emit enough working light.

    Thank you Enduring!

I so need fresh eyes to see this. I feel I'm going down the rabbit hole with this.

I could use bolt lights over DR table or over our pool table. That's certainly an idea!!

Or I could get smaller shades for the barn lights- keeping the gooseneck arm.

The bolt lights could be paired and placed over a pool table. I thought of pool table when I first saw them. Or on a porch/entryway for general lighting. When I think of pool table lighting I think of down lighting. Your bolt pendents spill light out from the sides and top too. I don't think that would be the best for pool table. If the bolt lights had a low wattage bulb in them, they would look sparkly like a chandelier.

I agree one or the other must go. The bolt lights are super cool and you can tell I am very impressed! I think they would be awesome in a game room or man cave but are too big for where they are. I think keep the barn lights you already have that going on. I agree those carriage light sconces on the side wall are large. Get some smaller pendants that don't compete with the barn lights and you are good.

These have the barn light shape but the glass doesn't take away from your existing lights.

Enduring, you do think the bolt pendant lights would work over the pool table?

Ravencajun, yes, too many butts in the kitchen!! I do like those pendants, thanks!!

I think I'm having regrets over everything in this kitchen! I knew it'd be different but feel it has too much going on. Removing the shelves helped to calm it some. But still something not right.

Benjesbride suggested this sconce on the thread about my floating shelves

Do you think this would look better than the barn lights?

I love the switch & hardware on it!! Is it rejuvenation?

I love the bolt pendants over the island. I like the FP sconces with them too.

I think seven lights are too much. Could you eliminate the two over the narrow windows? You don't really need to light the counter along the sink.

I am not a fan of the articulated arm lamps in a kitchen. They look like reading lamps to me.

The bolt pendants are growing on me! I think it's the barn lights that need to go

Im adding UC lighting under the shelves by the range & wanted to have everything ready when electrician comes.

Mayflowers, I do have recessed lighting bit, it makes a shadow on the countertops.

What about something smaller, like these

School house electric in antique black. They show the glass shades with Edison bulbs, which I'm not really fond of. 100w

I like those. What is the size compared to the barn lights?

These are 7" vs. 16" on the barn lights. Wish they had more of an antique pewter finish. Do you think the antique black is too harsh?

Or I could save a bit of $$ & do these?

I'm not crazy about the cone shaped shade.

What if you did the Schoolhouse Electric Satellite sconce in Antique Black and used the Open Globe Shade in clear or Smoke? The Smoke will show less dust and is kind of moody for your rustic vibe.

This page shows another style, the Princeton, with the globe shade. I don't know why they show a plain base plate in some photos and a traditional style in the photo with the globe shade, but I like the plain style for you.

Yes, the one I posted was the Princeton. I really like that !! And love the smoky glass shades

    Thank you Mayflowers:)

Yes, you are right, you have many beautiful elements but too much going on, and a few different styles too.

I would remove the carriage lamps. they fight with everything else.

I wonder how those smoke shades look. You could probably call Schoolhouse Electric and see if they have any additional photos. They're made in Portland and probably have excellent customer service, being a small company. Here's a photo of their black sconces. I thought of the round shades because of the dome shape of the bolt pendants, to keep some sameness.

Ok, I will remove the carriage lights & take pics-- gotta straighten up first!!

I love that picture & have it marked. I think the black shades might be too harsh & agree that the smoke shades might be better with the bolt pendants.

Oh, and I hate the FB as a backsplash!! Too busy!

Explanation on this......we were so rushed on this, our house sold very fast; had 30 days to pack & this place wasn't ready. Made really quick decisions. It's such a different space for me. Went from traditional 5bed house to 2 bed barn. Have weeded through so much stuff and now can look & take my time & do it right. Learning the hard way to take my time:(

I think lighting is very hard. A lot of it is trendy and the trend only sticks around for a few years. Very expensive to replace. At least with Schoolhouse you could replace the globes. The fixture is a classic.

Their spring and fall '14 catalogs have photos of lights with the round smoke globes. The catalogs are at the bottom of the page.

It is hard!! Especially when trying to visualize before there is an actual space. I'm definitely not a designer!!

So, I tried to take better pics of the space- removed the 2 sidelights-- yes, too much!! But still too many butts in the kitchen, for me.

I think ill order both- a black shade & the smoke globe-- if they are returnable. Both are in stock. But, the sconce is 4 weeks out:(

On another note, I really love the ship lap walls in that above photo. I could tear out the FB backsplash & do ship lap?

I like the lights above the Windows. How are you lighting the under shelves at the stove area? I think under counter lighting on Rhodes shelves would give you excellent task lighting. You need good lighting for the counters. Does your hood have a light in it too? I love the light in my hood.

have you checked the lighting forum for the amount of lumins you need in your space. There are formulas. It's best to calculate lumines because there are so many types of lighting. The old system of calculating watts won't work

I see you have canned lights too. Do they provide enough general lighting? If they do, I would take the lights at the stove down and use under shelf lighting with good elimination for tasks at the counter.

Oh I see you have the lights enhancing your pictures at the stove wall. In that case I'm stumped. I can't see the back splash, but taking it out for ship lap sounds excessive to me. I'm on my phone and everything is tiny.

you could have smaller gallery lights above each pic if they need illuminating or the wall needs some light dimension.

peppadoodle - the more I see of your kitchen, the more I like it - it's really neat! No to the ship lap:) I haven't read everything, but took a moment to slap in the two lights May picked out, in hopefully the right place, and poorly 'erased' some of the barn lights. My two cents - I love the open feeling without heavy upper lights; not sure these lights give that feeling. (The island ones are wonderful, kudos to DH).

Lumen calculation-- I'm going to have to spend some time on that one-- but, from my preliminary calculation-- I have more than enough. Not counting the sconces that will be on the FP and adding the seating area in front of it in the square footage.

Right now the lighting is from the hood, Enduring. Electrician is going to add strip led's under shelves.

Ok, I'll forget about ship lap:)

Oldbat2be, thank you for the mock up!! Shoot, it looks so much cleaner without those big ole barn lights over the Windows. What do do with the existing electrical sockets there & will I have enough light?

And I'll tell DH y'all liked his lights. It won't hurt his feelings if I don't use them,. He just enjoys welding as a hobby & thought it'd be a neat idea.

And thank you, oldbat2be. It's an adjustment with no uppers. But, I knew I wanted Windows to see the trees that surround our barn.

This house doesn't need much added to it & im used to blank box/cookie cutter that needs stuff added to it. Or the busier my life gets, the more I'm needing calm in my home. Or my taste are changing. Or I'm influenced by better design here and houzz photos. Idk.

I think shiplap will be too many stripes.

I like the windows without lights, so what about my earlier suggestion of just a sink light? If you did the two over the shelves and one centered, you'll have three, a good design number. I think the black lights look fine, but they are too small next to the hood. The barn lights seem a little too big. Maybe the smoke globe will be just right.

I don't think the FP sconces will add much light.

    Peppapoodle thanked User

What about counter task lighting at the sink counter, on either side of the sink. Is there enough light at night to see your work?

    Peppapoodle thanked enduring

I'm having people over tonight so I'm going to go without the barn lights & see if I get bad shadows.

    Thank you Mayflowers & Enduring!!

Both suggestions are good-- basically, just the sink and each side of the hood.

I could switch to rejuvenation- they have a double armed sconce- for over the window & the single for range wall?

Sticking with the globe shape-- no smoke colored. Opal or clear. And they have antique nickel. But dang, overpriced!!

Ok, so I hear you on the ship lap!! But I do love that kitchen!!

While I'm getting things right........ What about a tile backsplach-- very earthy & a neutral creme color like encore crackle or something instead of MORE stripes on the wall?

I even have striped chairs!! Lol

Question, where would you put the back splash? the stone on the wall is your backsplash and its lovely.

Second question. If you stand back from the lighting does it hit you in the eye? I was at a restaurant that switched out all the incandescent bulbs for compact florescent. All of the lovely pendants were made for the bulb to fit inside the opaque glass shades. The CPF bulbs all hung down out from below the shade and glared me in the eye. Not just one, but all of them in the room did that. I had such a miserable time there I never went back. Just be cautious to where your light will shine. I like my undercounter lights to shine on my counter and not in my eyes from afar. In my tiny kitchen its easy to accomplish, but with larger expanses I would imagine that there could be more opportunity for glare.

Oh no keep the beautiful fantasy brown backsplash! It's great. I like the bolt lights with the smaller lights and maybe just one of the small lights over the sink. Much better with the carriage lights gone. To cover where the lights were put a flat cover plate and maybe a small art piece like framed herb pictures or garden pictures something kitchen related.

Ineeded good light in my kitchen so I went with all led bulbs in a daylight spectrum around 5000. It fantastic I can see! We found good buys on leds at Costco and eBay.

After trying to order from rejuvenation unsuccessfully- I never received samples & the lady I was dealing with was having issues & wouldn't return my call. Not so impressed with their customer service!!

Anyways, I ordered these from shades of light. DH is balking- saying they are too small & unwilling to hang them right now.

    Are these horrible?!?
