I'm assuming you don't have much rain/water. Newspaper will work for a time, but a short time. It breaks down quickly and might become unsightly if you don't have enough gravel on top. I would think it would be worth the money to put some kind of weed barrier down that is purchased. It won't be "slick" to walk on, it won't break down quickly. Cost is more and it's not considered "natural" but it also depends how often you want to redo the pathways. If you're going to redo the pathways I'd make it worth my while. The heavier barrier is more expensive...but again...lasts longer. Looks like you have a beautiful garden area. I don't suppose you want to spray chemicals...right? Probably not. Heidi

Hi Heidi, thanks very much for your advice. In fact, we've had a lot of rain over the past months, so newspaper, if I'd used it, would have rotted in no time. The weed barrier looks like being the way to go. Yes, chemicals are out for me. I avoid them like the plague. I'll check the weed barrier options at the local garden centre. Thanks again!
