Barb, you do know what you're talking about. :) I have a parva white and that is fairly small with flexible leaves.

The larger leaves on the plant pictured are channeled and there are some smaller leaves that look rounded like the IKEA Fernwood leaves. No thorns that I saw.

It looks like Fernwood to me, your description of the leaves fits.

Does the Fernwood send out offsets above ground? I can't find a picture that shows this.

Yes, both of mine are doing that, plus underground pups - each has 4.

I complained to Hirt's, they refunded me for the other plant but not for this one. I guess they didn't believe me.

Hirt's messed up on a few of my orders and never replied to my complaints so I will never shop there again. I purchased a Gold Hahnii and got a Hahnii Marginated. At the time I have several marginated and didn't want any more.

Japonesa to me looks a lot like Fernwood so maybe check that out.

Stush the other plant I ordered was a dwarf laurentii, it looked like hahnii marginated and I don't have one of those. They sent golden hahnii, I already have two and he refunded me for that one. Last fall they sent me two wrong sans and they were damaged and refunded me for both. They have nice plants but they usually get the sansevierias wrong. I've ordered others plants for me and my mom and they sent the right ones.

Isn't Japonesa the same as Fernwood? It's so confusing.

Just my luck that Hirt's chooses to disrespect me. I will still never order from them. They send the wrong plant is one thing, choose to ignore me is another. How many emails should I have sent them. I even included photos of what they offered and what I got. Just no reply. Like who cares.

Maybe some one will post in on the difference of Japonesa and Fernwood. I can't tell the difference. I have only very young ones.

I'm convinced that Japonesa is a 'technique' of planting sans leaves, not the name of a sansevieria. The leaves we've seen most used in Japonesa are from Fernwood, hence all the confusion. I remember seeing some pots of cylindrica leaves planted the same way, but I think that 'technique' had another name.

Hirt's does seem to have a reputation for sending the wrong plants. I don't think it's 'bait and switch' but their product control sure is lousy.

Russ, Thank you for clearing this up. I was gifted several Fernwood and just got a Japonesa given to me. It looked the same as the Fernwood. I have special tags in the pots to ID them and tell them apart. I'll copy your answer in my log book.

And I too have had lots of problems with Hirts, but I love the quality of their plants, that is, when they get them right! I wrote directly to the owner/manager various times, not sure which, and I immediately got replacements or refunds. I did advise them that they need to train their staff in plant identifications tho...

Stush I'm sorry that happened to you. Did you order from their website , etsy or ebay? The person I contacted is the son of the owner and I hear d back from him right away. I'm not happy I have a giant Fernwood but at least I was refunded for the other wrong sansevieria.

My husband is a truck driver and he thinks they might be drop shipping (the retailer does not keep goods in stock but instead transfers customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer, another retailer, or a wholesaler, who then ships the goods directly to the customer).

The sans are usually wrong and they are never packeged well. The other plants I've ordered are packaged well and each plant has been wrapped with paper, like they came from different places.

I purchased from them for years from their Nursery web site. Purchased outside bushes and plants and some house plants. Never had a problem until i purchased Sans. They blew me off. Emailed them twice and with pictures. So I am still mad at them. I promised myself I will never do business with them.
