The problem is the dark counter top. If you do white cabinets, they're going to have a black and white thing going on that I am not a fan of. I realize that white kitchens are the trend, but they need to consider it within the rest of the kitchen. I suppose given this situation, I would lighten the cabinets and then leave just the island counter top black and pick a lighter granite for the rest of the cabinets along the walls. I would also upgrade the cabinet hardware to something bigger and nicer.
