thompson grape question

I am in los angeles, gardening zone 10b. I planted two Thompson grape vines, this is the second year. They are watered on drip irrigation twice a week. Here they are in June:

But most of the grapes fell off. By now, late august, the leaves are mostly brown and the grapes never grew any larger. They also look like they got hit with powdery mildew.

Having never grown grapes before I'm looking for some advice. Should I expect better results next year, it's third summer? I did heavily prune in the winter but should I have been trimming the longer vines during the fruiting season? Is the leaf die off expected by this time of year?

The leaves are dying because they are not getting sun. Hard to tell the grapes might have powdery mildew. Did you spray anything? If not, you will need to spray early next year and more times too. Before you see any sign of mildew.

side note, make sure you prune them according to what Thompson needs.

The leaves are dying from powdery mildew. That's also the reason the grapes are rotting. It won't get better next yr unless you spray. It's a very common issue. UC Davis has very good guidelines for control.

got it. I did spray once this year with Organicide but I see, reading the UC link, it was already too late by that time and it needed to be more frequent. Strangely I did not get any powdery mildew on the tomatoes this year. Grapes must be very susceptible.
