Project: Heuchera Around a Tree

last modified: 9 years ago

On Pinterest, I saw a gorgeous photo of a variety of coleus planted at the base of a tree.

I love coleus, but don't want the expense or energy of planting this design every year.

I decided to try it with heuchera. I planted these 3 months ago. I've moved them around, playing with the color configuration.

Note: there are 2 large coleus plants, to help fill in as the circle winds toward the far side of the tree.

I started with the intention to leave space for the heucheras to grow, but now looking at the photo, they might be planted too close together.

I'm enjoying learning about these plants. I didn't realize the leaves would change colors during the season. when I first planted them, each variety was more distinctive from the one next to it. I didn't want them to blend together.

Do you all think this will look better if I build up the soil as it is in the cop photo with coleus?

Please feel free to share ideas.
