You can't use a rug under that table because it should be 4 feet larger than the table top to allow for pulling the chairs out and sitting down without them falling off the rug. You also don't want the rug to run into baseboards or walls, so a rug is not for this space. A better investment would be a new light fixture that shines upward. Down facing lights wash out food colors and cast nose and other shadows on diners' faces. I'd remove the dated fork and spoon and add a large piece of art on the larger wall. If you're keeping the curtains, then be sure there is some of that color in the art. Generally, it is easier to buy art first and then pick a color from it for curtains, but you might hurt someone's feelings if you started over.
