Beautiful!

Thanks Jacob!

So beautiful! I love their 'floating' flight!

Sherry

Thanks! I love their flight too and they are probably the easiest to photograph since they rest for so long while nectaring.

What is the host for these butterflies?

Jane

Hi Jane. Passion vine (passiflora) is their host plant. It grows wild here.

Rhonda

There are many kinds of passion vines. The ones with red flowers are usually not good for butterflies. The one I have most success with is the Corkystem passionflower, Passiflora suberosa. This works equally well for Zebras and Fritillaries. It's probably best to go to a nursery that you trust and ask them which ones they recommend as larval food.

Thanks for being more specific Tom! I need to start using the Latin names as well as the common names.

Jane,

The one that grows wild around here is Passiflora Incarnata, purple passion vine. I'm lucky that the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville about half an hour from me has butterfly host and nectar plants for sale every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The plants offered change every week but they almost always have some variety of Passiflora (this week they have corky stemmed).
