From what I have been told by a few very knowledgeable people, is that the A. crispum as a species or ssp. is not a strong or vigorous plant. This is why they cross the crispum w obesum and others, to get the pattern and petals type of the crispum.

I believe if you are seeing blooms w similarities and/or traits of crispum, they are probably not listed as obesum x crispum, but through your studies are making a valid assumption?

If you have sent messages to sellers and they have not responded within a reasonable time period, then discard them from your list of possibilities.

I think if we are talking different growth rates and uneven growth, then we are speaking more of one grafted onto another (species to species). If speaking about hybrid crosses of two species, then this is different. The resultant seedlings will grow as it is predisposed to by genetics.

Livingstones Nursery has quite a few hybrid crosses and these would be right from someone that has created many of the hybrid crosses we know today.
