The new piece is lovely. But looks like significantly less storage ... just something to consider.

It's perfectly fine, I do it all the time to make rooms look more like they came together over time. The only trap you sometimes see is when people get wood colors that are too similar ... then it looks like they were TRYING to match and it just fell short. So it's often better when there's enough contrast in color to show you were intentionally not trying to match.

I love the piece and wood tones can be different, but I'm not sure if its so much the color of the wood, but the piece itself if it will work with your room as a whole and consider the storage reduction and its size on the large wall. I assume you are tired of your dresser...have you consider updating its look instead? If you changed the mirror, lamp and accessories, it could feel very different (see pic #1) and you could even restain it and change the handles similar to what is on the commode. If you love the commode, could it go into a guest room and it could even work in a foyer with a chair on either side (pic #2).
