Thanks George. I live in central Indiana in zone 5. Our spring weather is pretty variable. This spring was pretty normal. It's been hot and humid this summer. Mostly 80's, and a couple 90s. I did have a summer awhile back that was in the 90s most of the time, and the beans didn't make blossoms. But this summer hasn't been that hot.

I do water them well during the summer. So I don't know if it's an issue of heat, and maybe this variety (Blue Lake poles) is just extra sensitive to heat? Also.....are stink bugs more active later in the season? I realize that the stink bug problem doesn't keep the beans from flowering, but I don't like to eat beans that have been sucked on by those little jerks. haha

Every year brings a different set of garden challenges. It's never perfect or the same as last year. Plant as usual in late spring after frost and keep on top of the pest problems. Check daily and squish problem insects or tap into a can of soapy water. The stink bugs seem to get worse this time of year. And they will detach flowers, so keep up with them. It's the worst part of gardening, pest patrol.

Beans prefer cooler weather and will sometimes not produce in high heat. You can't control the weather so just go with it. In time they will produce. I like Fortex beans. They seem to survive almost anything.

Thanks susan. You're definitely right about every year having it's own challenges. I think I'll just plant more Kentucky Blue poles (since they are early and seem to be a little more resistant to bad things) and I think I'll give Fortex a try. Looks like it has lots of good reviews. Thanks for your input!
