I assume zone 7? Where are you? Is it rural or urban; how extreme? What did you build?

Are there still some tadpoles?

I live in zone 7, maryland. I've had a pond for many, many years and have always had trouble keping frogs. It may have been the blue heron who took my last one. Rural area, whwn I cleaned out the pond, no tadpoles. I do have a heron decoy now that appears to be helping to keep the fish.

It is a mystery. I have lots of toad, tree frog, green frog and cricket frog babies but after they hop out of the pond I don't see too many of the frogs. (They do mature and leave because I see the cute little fellas around the pond for a few days.) Lots of toads stay around though. I am always kind of happy to see the bigger frogs drop by and then leave in a week or so. I just don't want them to bother my fish. Right now I have a cricket frog that has spent the last month hanging out--I don't mind him because he is too little to do any damage.

Frogs need to be able to find food. Mainly they eat insects, generally things that are small. But that means many of them will also eat smaller frogs, basically anything small that moves. They need shelter as well. So a healthy environment is what will make frogs come and stay. It'll also make snakes come and stay, all part of a healthy environment. A pond is only a small part of the overall equation. But being in a rural area is an advantage, unless there's overuse of herbicides and pesticides.
