I want to make over my dining room. It is dated. Wallpaper, chair rail and traditional chandelier. Not sure whether to remove chair rail, etc.

Here are photos of my dated dining room. need ideas! remove chair rail? paint all one color? new cgandelier...would like new chairs for dining room. lighten up!

Hi. The room is really rather lovely, but I certainly see why you would like to lighten it up. I suggest you paint the walls, top and bottom, in a light colour chosen with the white on the pillars in mind. consider light beige, cream or grey. I would go for cream because it would work best with those beautiful curtains/ Paint the chair rail white. Parson's chairs would work beautifully with your table.

I do think there's a purple elephant in the room -- what are the chances of replacing the carpet? It's a pretty heavy colour I'm seeing on my screen.

Thank you Rina. Yes I agree. the carpet is burgundy. Same color as burgundy in wallpaper. not sure about cream paint for walls. the front entry is cream and I feel like there needs to be some color. I can get rid of th ed drapes and yes the carpet needs to go too. my home is warm tones. the adjacent loving room is butternut but I'm wanting to change that color too. I can't do everything at once but do need to plan for everything at one time (paint, carpet etc.). I like the chair. Thank you for your input.

A light grey-blue word work -- not itself warm, but very good with cream and other warm tones. I love the colour of the curtains, but if they don't work with your new look, then change them.

Yes, while you are removing the wallpaper, I would remove the chair rail. Repairing the walls all at one time.

Remove wallpaper and the rug (as they are the biggest culprits - lol). I would get a longer curtain rod and raise it and add new light colored drapery that rests more onto the wall. New chandelier, art and accessories and reupholster your chairs (easy to do). Search for dining rooms that you like - color and accessory wise - and keep an idea book and you'll notice you are drawn to the same looks. Then do a priority list and purchase when you can..but start with the rug and then the walls (I wouldn't go too far off your entrance color). Good luck..it's an important room as you enter.
