No ground. They will not survive heat in GA. So - either inside or in a greenhouse with some kind of cooling. They are from the very south of Africa - moderate climate - and if it is more than 75F they suffer.

Thank you! And what Irina said is true - far too hot here. These come from the mountains of South Africa at cool elevations. I do know a lot of people who do plant them outside but must keep them shaded from sun and heat. Mine are indoors on lighted plant stands and not in a greenhouse. I plant to build a greenhouse once we move back up into the mountains next summer but it'll be for my tropicals. My streps will be located into a cool basement.

Old photo but you get the idea. More new shelving arrived the other day and I'm currently spreading out the streps and African violets and sorting out all of the propagation trays, flats, and cups to their own sections.

Here's a better shot of this end of the studio as of right now. I'm in the process of moving African Violets and other gesneriads into the right hand section with dimmer lighting than the streptocarpus on the left prefer. The other end of my studio has more shelves set up, etc. This room is kept cool enough for them and temps are starting to ease up for us outside, a lot of them are making flower buds.

wow! this is pretty intense! i see you even hang them in zip locks since there's no space left on shelves :). very clever!

Four of the big steel ones and others that aren't. I plan to set up at least two more in here this year or early next. The hanging baggies save on shelf space and are for leaf and bloom stalk propagation, or small seed batches. Each one is fully sterilized before sealing and do not require watering for months at a time as long as I don't make them too wet in the first place.

If you have no where else to hang them, a window will work! You can pin up string or wire and attach the baggies there, if you do not have lighted shelving. Strep leaves, and some kinds of AV's, need brighter light than a window can give you without direct sun so the success rate will be lower. If you can possibly find a place for even a single cheap strip light, you will get much better results.

That was an east facing window so it only got dappled sun in the morning.

I agree! Too bad I don't live with 3 other plant lovers! If I did I would probably have my windows COVERED with hanging baggies! In fact I would probably consider them curtains!!!! LOL Rosie
