hardwood choice question

We are renovating our kitchen which is adjacent to the family room with open concept. The floor in the family room is a medium toned walnut but is too soft to carry through into the kitchen. We've had it for 5 years and it already has significant scratches. We would like to stay with a medium tone color as the floors abut and we prefer to be complementary. Since the kitchen is a high traffic area we need a really hard wood. Our flooring contractor suggested yellow birch to match the grain but we are concerned it won't be hard enough so we are thinking about perhaps Brazilian Walnut, Amendoim or Santos Mahogany. Any thoughts?
