Length of rug relative to space?

This looks so nicely proportioned! What's your rule of thumb on how close a long runner like this can be to the structural elements on either end -- in my case, front door and staircase. Its a Brooklyn townhouse. Thanks!

    The amount of space around the rug depends of course on any furniture in the space as well. I suggest leaving 6 to 12 inches of exposed floor around the rug...sometimes even 18 inches in a larger room. If your entry has no furniture, then 6 to 12 inches of exposed floor would work. There is not a hard and fast rule of thumb because furniture placement is critical to the decision. Best of luck!
