Need help with landscaping!

We have lived in this house over 15 years and a lot of the bushes, etc. are dying or they just don't look very good. We do not have a fenced yard and there are a lot of deer and shade, so the plants would have to be resistant to deer (I'm not sure there are any!) and "shade tolerant". Thank you!

It may depend on what zone you live in, so talk to someone at a garden center. (a real one, not a big box store.)

Where I live, mule deer eat everything except Russian sage, lavender and tall ornamental grasses.

Yard rats, I call them!
