Why is my Japanese maple leafing out now?

I have a green laceleaf one. Its acer palmatum 'waterfall'. I recently planted it around a month and a half ago. I realize that there are like 5 leafs on this maple starting to leaf out now. Why this late in the season though? Shouldn't it be the opposite(leafs falling off)?

Japanese maples will continue to push new growth throughout the season. If it is still 'summer' in your area - the weather has definitely swung over to fall in mine - then this is not at all unexpected. It is of no concern and is a good indication that your new tree is settling nicely.
