Hello! White ceramic subway tile is great, but you can also do glass subway tile. This way, you have the look of subway tile and it looks clean and modern. If you really want to do the white subway tile, use a dark grout to break up the white! See attached images. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The glass is beautiful too and does look modern. A darker grout may also be a good idea - I can be very flamboyant when I'm cooking ;)

acm - I like the middle picture you used from Lake Minnetonka - it warms up the space without being dark.

Warm things up a bit with pattern and color. The herringbone tile below (Allen&Roth) combines white, gray with warmer colors. I just saw it installed with white quartz countertops and it is stunning. The photo doesn't do it justice.

Subway tiles are so in right now and very timeless. Choose a color palate and style that won't go out of style soon. Especially if you're thinking of selling any time soon.

HI -- Because your kitchen is a bare canvas it needs something with lots of interest . I am sick and tired of the usual suggested subway tiles . Look at those random pattern Moroccan tiles . They won't be going out of style any time soon even if they are very popular right now . And tile the whole wall around the window too. It will make your kitchen a show piece !

auntthelma - I really like your sparkle suggestion. Only a bit of stainless for me though because, I'd be wiping them down all day otherwise. The Mill Valley photo is gorgeous and the glass/stainless mosaic are probably the best two for me.

I kind of love the white, glass and stainless combo.

I might have to find something similar for my kitchen. We never did the tile backsplash. Just painted.

When I saw the pic of your kitchen, my first thought was a cobalt blue tile, something like this color.

That's very close to the color that I'll be doing the table baileysr - it's one of my favourites :D

You will never regret white subway tiles. When the world moves on to the next trendy backsplash, you'll be left with a timeless classic that won't date your kitchen. Your color can come from your walls, furniture and accessories — and you're never locked in to a certain palette. Use it in the traditional way, or in a herringbone pattern.

Why not stick with your white tiles and perhaps paint an accent wall or two, above your tiles on the window wall. You said you were putting shelves up either side of window so that would look effective. You can always paint over the blue if you later tire of it

Very pretty kitchen! Are your counters brown or gray? I really like the idea of painting your kitchen table blue...I think it will give your kitchen the color pop it needs:) Will the floating shelves on either side of your windows be wood..white..or blue like your table;)

I wonder what color the countertops are. They look pinkish on my screen. You need to keep that color in mind too. Go simple but do a light gray grout. That will be al you need. Once you get shelving up with tile on that whole wall and painting your table, adding a few accessories perhaps blue enamel tea pot etc. it will look great. Enjoy!

There are subway tiles in different colors and glass subway looking tiles in many different colors. You don't have to get them in white

I like the warmth that the wood table brings...have you thought about just replacing chairs with a white the compliments your cabinets and then have your floating shelves to the left of the window be the same wood tone as table.

Flo Mangan the counters are a taupe color similar to the floor and I was thinking of doing the shelves that same color - that would make all the horizontal surfaces the same tone. I'll try to find the counter chip for reference

This is the countertop, it does seem to have pink/salmon undertones here. I've never noticed that until now.

Love your room, especially the lights. I'm thinking some sort of brushed aluminum would be great...just to play little contrast with those lights.

I applaud that you had the patience to take things in the proper steps, leaving the backsplash and paint till the end! With your countertops, I'd go white arabesque tiles; warm gray grout (on the cabinet all only) with a warm gray painted wall by the window. Lovely kitchen!

I would love to see that table when you are done with it. What kind of paint/shade are you doing? A vibrant cobalt?? What if you did the subway (either a plain white or even a carrara) and then ran a cobalt pencil liner 2/3 of the way up?? Love that blue rug above!

I can't find a pic w/the cobalt pencil, but I found one w/the black.

Pretty counter. I like the grey in it. Lowes has a pretty glazed ceramic tile in the color Pearl that might work.

They also have a grey glass tile in the color Smoke that would be nice and the 3x12 size would be unique and different;)

kjoy1 that smoke grey glass has a lovely green earthy green tone that I like and they pearl tile is a very calming color for me. A trip to Lowes is in order to have a closer look.
