Range Hood - Help! Ducting too low

Help! I removed my old over the range microwave and discovered this rectangular type of ducting that goes into my wall. It's an odd shaped duct in the wall, and seems to funnel into a circle inside way along the bottom right when I feel in there.

I want to elevate the location of the duct in the wall, otherwise the range hood is going to sit only 18 inches above the surface of the cooktop. How would I do this?
