No it is a tomato fruitworm (aka corn earworm). They are the larvae of a tan colored moth with white wing spot. She lays the eggs near the stem connection or near by leaves and the lavae, when the eggs hatch burrow into the fruit.

If you Google them by name you get much more info. Also Google pics of tomato hornworms so you'll know what they look like. They primarily attack leaves and are found on the stems of the plants, not the fruit. They are also 10x bigger than fruitworms.

Hornworms can and do eat fruit. But they usually only eat fruit once they get really big, and they usually eat off the outside wall only. They do not burrow into fruit. And yes, as Dave says, they get huge.
