Wow, great ideas, Cory. Could you post a pic of one of your tags and labels? I wish we could post examples of Excel spreadsheets. I would love to see yours.

By the way, on the back of the tag, I have the source and date I got the tree.

You're definitely not a wierdo, Vladimir! I think I have the same tags. I love these things. According to the box, they will not rust or deteriorate with age! My mom sent me a box of 100 last year when I bought my 3rd mango tree.. she figured I needed a way to start labeling, especially if I was going to keep buying more trees. Except I don't do anything fancy (I don't have nearly enough to need a spreadsheet!) except write the variety of the tree. For those people that name their trees, it would be really cute to write the tree's "name" on the tag.

Although.. I think I'll start etching on the backside of the tag the date I got it. Great idea, thanks!

LOL. Vladimir and Cory...you guys are a bit nerdy! I had not thought to do that. However, the idea is brilliant - both the tags and spreadsheet. Figs...thanks for showing me the box..I will order tags today. I will also compose a spreadsheet today. The thing is that for some of my trees, I will only be able to put in the approximate time, which in the long term not that important. I do not think I will be able to keep up a fertilization log, but will include it just in case. I will create the sheet in Google docs, that way, if anyone wants it, I can easily share it with anyone on the forum and save them some time.

I leave the greenhouse tags on, it's annoyed me that one vendor in particular took the nursery tags off and put on their own generic tags that basically say nothing. This provider has annoyed me on other counts too so I'm not ordering from them again anyway lol.

That same vendor has a word doc they send out of their listings of all potential trees broken out into varietal groupings so I actually use that as my main inventory list, I just tick them off or write on the bottom additional ones I have. Then i just keep a count on the same sheet of the total number of trees I have including duplicates. I like using their list because it reminds me of all the cool varieties out there I still haven't seen :).

I will probably move to a spreadsheet at some point, I have an extensive catalogue for all my vegetable seeds. When I got the trees doesn't really matter to me they have all arrived within the past 2 years.

I ordered the metal tags and made a spreadsheet...I have 45 trees!!! OMG...when I see that I freak! Greenhouse for me next year for sure! One of the columns I added is the harvest months. I wanted that for the mandarins. I would like to make sure that I have a continuous supply so I need to check on that. I don't have it filled in, but will research it and add it.

Im working on my grow room today, just getting it set up for now. I think I can manage at least another week or so outside for everyone...

There will be another row in front plus way more trees on shelves and in the corner behind me once done... (gulp, panic setting in...) lol.

That looks great Hobby! I am going to slowly start ordering rolling plant holders so that I can easily rotate them around. It should be interesting for sure! You should be proud of me...I went to my local nursery that had TONS of citrus trees and shrubs from Record Buck farms...I did not buy any!

My trees are identified by row number (alphbetical) and tree number in the row; that way if there is a problem or something special we just make a note of the tree; and someone can go back to find it.

I only have seven and no duplicates. Pretty easy to just remember what they are.

I keep the nursery tags n the few that broke off I made tags for it. I also maintain a spreadsheet with mon/year acquired, rootstock, citrus type . too lazy to write fert applications. n the mon/year is more to help in my self control so I know I ordered too many that year n should restrain not that its v effective:)

Cory - love ur colored tags idea it certainly would make it much faster to prioritize.

I need to start labeling the pots. I think a chipmunk or squirrel tore off a couple labels from my trees. I had benn keeping the label from the grower at the side of the pots.

None of you who keep track of plants seem nerdy to me, I do it too. I have them recorded in books, one for each plant type, citrus, apples, plums pears, cherry, peonies ( I have 80 varieties of these) and the annual flowers I start from seed etc. . I record the name, date, nursery I bought from, rootstocks, zones, and columns for each season in which I record growing notes for that year. I like to flip through my books and re-read my notes on long winter evenings. Then I add copious little papers with my wish lists (stuck between the pages) that are constantly revised and crossed out and new varieties added.

I love the metal tags, they look sturdy and long lasting. I will have to look for some of those.

That's a nice journal Ubro. I was considering adding pics of each tree so I could compare growth more easily. I'm not sure I can add it to my spreadsheet though. Can anyone think of a way to link the two?

I did all my trees by memory and position in my yard as to the exact cultivar for all my fruit trees. I would have to be careful about my citrus if I had many because they get moved around. In their cases I use the containers to seperat them. My Kuharske Citranges are in 5 gallon buckets. C35 are 5 in on pot and the other 2 each have their own but identical pots and the US897's are in any thing but a 5 gallon bucket or 2 duplicate pots. All of the kumquats, tangerine tree Cuban Shaddock tree, and Poncirus Trifoliata are in ground.

I hear you Steve. I pretty much know what everything is except for a few young mandarin trees from Harris - I get those confused sometimes. Vladimir, I am using google sheets...I need to see if I can do that. I can convert it to an excel file, but I mostly use an iPad, so I am not sure if I can get excel for it.

I figured out how to add a hyperlink in Google sheets...easy. I created a citrus album on Houzz and then link the photos there to my spreadsheet. I just took pics of the rest of my trees so I can upload them. I do wish I could add the photo directly though.

I Don't and I should!!! I just don't remove the labels the trees come with and call it a day..I really should!
