Planting garlic after potatoes?

The current potato patch is the handiest spot in our garden for planting garlic this fall, about a month after the potato harvest. I'm hoping there's time to sow and till under a quick buckwheat planting in between. Is there any reason not to? I seem to recall our garlic getting some wireworm damage one year. And I've read that garlic and potatoes make poor companions but I assume that means they don't share space well. Thanks for advice..
