What is the in thing to but in basements for flooring?

There is no "in" thing for basement flooring. It depends completely on how you will use it and your budget. You can consider vinyl flooring, tile, carpet, laminate, etc. Most people would prefer some sort of hard flooring and then use an area rug in your seating area. You have to decide on flooring before you can pick a wall color. If you want carpet, go with gray carpet and white walls. If you want tile or a wood look laminate, you could use any shade of wood tone, and either white or cream walls. Or you could do some sort of blue and white floor.

Sherwin Williams "snowfall"Would look nice and do a tile that looks like barnwood in grey.

@amderk What about a light, warm neutral color....thinking maybe BM Sail Cloth? It can look white in a bright place, but tends to be more of a light, warm buttery beige bordering on ivory in a room without so much light. Just an idea! OR you could pull a light blue to use as a neutral to play off what looks like a light blue in the couch (something like BM Palace Pearl).

I think a taupe would be very nice with your sofas..

We just did our basement (65% done).
We also have no windows, and it will be multi-purpose, like yours. We were told to keep it light and bright, and I'm happy we did.
Light Oak engineered flooring, BM "Intense White" (white-pale gray) on main walls; ceiling and baseboards BM "Simply White". We are going to do the basement Bathroom in BM "Collingwood", which the BM Int decorator thought would be a nice combo.
Our two chairs are a grey-blue and a dark chocolate leather L sofa.
I'm super-happy we did light and bright...particularly because we have 7.5 ft ceilings. Can always add more color with framed photos and artwork, pillows, rug etc.

I haven't taken any as still not done but can do and post later tonight. Not sure if the pot lighting and photo will do it justice. I would say the Intense White is on the "cooler" side, but the decorator said its a warm color. I do like the brightness and opens up the space nicely.

Thank you -,to be honest I haven't walked on them in bare feet yet because my hubby is still making messes! We are installing some small wall baseboard heaters to keep the basement cozy warm. I'm thinking of doing the steps/stairs in BM Racoon Fur, and risers also in BM Simply White.

Those carpet swatches look great. I'd stick to a med grey taupe to match your sofa, but dark enough if your kids spill, etc.
I've chosen the idea of area rugs on top of the hardwood as we have a dog who sheds, and she also likes cool floors mixed with soft rug. She is THE princess!

Nice. I'm going to suggest SW CRISP LINEN. It has a yellow tone, but not too sunshiny. I'm glad you got flooring samples though. Take whatever you choose to the paint store, plus a sofa swatch & they will help you.

Can't see the names on my screen but I like the top right hand carpet swatch.

Royal cup,premier and medal are very nice carpet samples...pushes you away from warm tones.....that way you could add a taupe/gray tone on the walls. Would look great with all shades of blue.

krissel51 love your little mock up of our basement. Looking at our samples today I'm not sure I love any. I'm heading back to the carpet store again today. Anything in particular I should look for?

Wool /blend burber or other weave will last and last .....can withstand high traffic etc!!
Will costs more but looks fab and lasts!!

I agree that Berber is very practical with kids however it generally does not have the soft feel of a twist unless you go for the more expensive blends. It depends on what you want in the family room, wearability or a soft touch for the kids as they play on the floor. I personally am a fan of Berber for most rooms that have high use.

Fiddled some more with color choices (or lack of in one case). Of course these are rather bland not knowing how much you are willing to add bright color. I know a light carpet is not ideal with kids, but it would really do a lot to lighten up the room.

2 negatives about a Berber is the loops can get snagged...and it is not a soft surface.

a good nylon or Olyefin carpet is great for family room or with a lot of activity....a low twist with a slight flecks of neutral tones will hide soiling and is still soft for children and tootsie toes!

Which coffee fee table would you add here and which color? Also comes in white.

Warm gray on the walls, dark ceiling beams with exposed can lights, light coffee table with a bit of detail so it isn't boring.

I would go with a more casual rustic top coffee table so no worries about scratching finish with the kids.

For those that have missed it, we painted our basement walls benjamin moore stone hearth which is a neutral taupe.

My husband will be adding pot lights in the end.

So rustic coffee table instead of smooth black or white? Also would you add end tables?

Yes at least one end table and maybe a floor lamp to give some height in the corner of the two sofas....Im thinking adding the wood element will give some warmth to the space and warm woods look great with blues and neutrals. I like to add small ottoman cubes in family spaces..they allow for more setting when needed and great to flank side of coffee table for gatherings..

like the way they are used in these rooms for example...

Something like these would add some personality and fun to the room...

Wouldn't be my first choice..they will look more gray in the space might look like you tried to match walls....and it didn't work! I would still go with a warmer wood tone. Like the table styles!

It it is rectangle. It's a custom coffee table. Can't seem to find some decent priced in Canada.

OK I will keep an I out for a rustic rectangle coffee table and will post updates.

As for the ottomans, I'm not against the idea as I like how they add some color ect, but what else would work to finish the seating area? Just wanting a few options.

A room screen would look nice and separate the two areas but still allow you to hear what's going on .

Don't think the screen divider will work very well with my 4 little ones.

I'm getting ready to have a custom coffee table built for us in a rustic wood with the black metal. Do you think it needs a shelf under?

No need for shelf..in my opinion just collects dust:) open bottom is nice and won't look to heavy.

Sounds good, will get started on the custom. Should I get him to make one side table?

I'm also looking for some ottoman's that I can reupholster.

A side table would be great! Great idea...on the ottomans.....but sometimes it can cost more than just getting new.....
